4 things you need to know when choosing natural cosmetics

What we put on our skin is more important than many of us really know. The largest organ in the body, the skin has the capacity to absorb up to 60% of whatever we apply to it, meaning that the myriad of toxic synthetic chemicals found in most non-natural products, are soaked up by the skin and transported straight into the bloodstream.

But there is an alternative. As the world becomes more informed about the dangers of toxic chemicals found in skincare products, more and more people are turning to natural cosmetics as a safer option, thanks to the lack of harmful ingredients, but also for the proven high-performance results that natural skincare essentials and wellbeing products bring.

Unfortunately, not all products claiming to use natural ingredients are what they seem, and just because something has ‘natural’ written on the label, does not mean that it is completely safe. These days consumers need to dig a bit deeper, read labels and educate themselves to make sure that they are getting the real deal.

Natural cosmetics Free from chemicals parabensLet us see what is definitely needed to avoid:

  • Avoid all parabens: Parabens are synthetic chemicals used to preserve your skincare products and keep bacteria at bay. They first started to raise health concerns in the 90’s due to their chemical compound imitating the hormone oestrogen and have since been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues.

  • Avoid all SLS: SLS stands for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate; a chemical detergent used to create the foamy lather in many beauty products today. While they may be effective cleansers, they have also been linked with cell degeneration, cancer, skin irritation and hair loss.

  • Avoid all PEGs: Polyethylene Glycol, or PEGs are petroleum-based chemical compounds used in skincare products to produce the desired thickness and texture. They also act as emulsifiers, surfactants, cleansing agents, and skin conditioners. The problem with PEGs is that they help the other toxic chemicals in the product to sink into the skin more effectively, and on top of that they can also cause skin irritation and hypersensitivity.

  • natural cosmetics veganAvoid all GMOs: Genetically modified organisms – or GMOs – are organisms whose DNA has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally so that they can tolerate highlevels of toxic pesticides and chemicals. Just as they are dangerous to ingest through our food, they are also dangerous to use on our skin and have been linked to liver and kidney problems, infertility, asthma, accelerated aging and immune problems.

Instead, you may choose cosmetics that are made using the finest-quality natural organic actives, according to vegan and cruelty-free methods, and free from parabens, SLS, mineral oils, GMOs, PEGs and harsh chemicals.
