Energiser Protein Smoothie

This is a great smoothie for any time of the day and can add a tasty boost to your breakfast.  Before we get started on making this energising protein filled smoothie, lets learn a little bit more about some of the ingredients i.e. Bee Pollen, Maca Pawder, Chia seeds, Flax seeds and also Hemp seeds.  All of the above can bring great benefits to your body in various ways to which we will have a look at now.

Bee Pollen – it is the pollen that worker honeybees have packed into a ball.  It is used in the hive to feed the young bees.  Bee pollen contains all of the nutrients that we require – vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, lipids (fats) and protein.  It is said that bee pollen can enhance your energy, aid digestion, soothe your skin and improve the cardiovascular system.  Bee pollen can be purchased in most health food shops and these days in some supermarkets.

Bee pollen should not be used if you have a pollen allergy, are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Maca Powder – Maca is a root that belongs to the radish family and is originally from Peru.  It tastes a little like malt or toasted oats.  If you haven’t used Maca before it’s best to begin by taking smaller amounts and then build up; even 1/2 teaspoon is a good place to start, at the other end? 1 tablespoon of the powder is an average daily dose. Rotating between few days on and a few days off is often recommended.

Chia, Flax and Hemp seeds – All of these seeds are little powerhouses filled with Omega 3 & Omega 6 which are essential fatty acids, and they also contain fibre which aids digestion.  Flax and Chia are higher in Omega 3 than 6, whilst Hemp seeds are higher in Omega 6 than 3.  Hemp seeds tends to provide a slightly higher ratio of protein also.  Flax seeds have a hard-outer shell and must be ground or chewed thoroughly to enable the nutrients to be released.


1 cup or 235ml milk – any is good, we like coconut or almond

1 Banana

1 tbsp Bee Pollen

1 tbsp raw Cacao powder

1 tbsp* maca powder * – see above regarding quantity

1 tbsp Chia, hemp or flax seeds (remember the flax seeds must be ground first)


How to do it;

Add everything to a blender and combine – whizz until smooth, taste and if you want it sweeter add a little honey to taste.
